2005 Miami Dolphins NFL Handicapping Review
By Tom Wilkinson
The 2004 Miami Dolphins may have been dead months before
the season even started as head coach Dave Wannstedt, who
resigned under fire halfway through the season, was a well
known lame duck entering it after having his general
manager’s powers stripped of him. Primary running back Ricky
Williams “retired” before the training camp to end any doubt
about the sports handicapping direction of Miami for sports
betting players. Many online sports betting blogs were, for
once, full of accurate predictions of Miami’s impending
demise.
Miami split their preseason games before the league opener
at home versus Tennessee. Right from the start even the
least observant sports betting player could see that this
team had no offense as their 7-17 loss to the Titans proved.
Online sports betting players surfing the net for sports
handicapping information could read multitudes of stories
regarding Miami’s quarterback woes and the deathwatch on
Wannstedt, which was hardly the news to inspire any support
for the Fish at online sports betting websites and
sportsbooks.
As it was Miami would collapse out of the gate losing it’s
first six games straight up, and five of those six against
the sports betting odds. About the only sports betting
players making football picks on Miami were those who were
trying to guess when the slump would end, which brings up
one of sports betting’s best adages which is that if a
sports betting player wagers ON a streak he can be beaten
only once.
After Miami gained a stunning straight up win and cover
against the sports betting odds at home versus St. Louis,
the Dolphins went back into the tank with two more
consecutive losses both straight up and against the sports
betting line. Wannstedt resigned after that final loss,
which was at home to lowly Arizona. The Dolphins entered a
bye week with a new coach and nothing to play for.
The sports betting line odds makers adjusted their lines to
give Miami some value to leery sports betting players and
the Fish responded with five wins against the online sports
betting boards and sportsbooks in their final seven games,
playing with renewed vigor under interim coach Jim Bates.
The sports handicapping lesson here is that the online
sports betting odds makers will keep adjusting lines on even
the most unattractive teams to get action.
