Patriots coach could be moving up in the world

FAIRFAX, Va. (AP) - Seton Hall was granted permission Wednesday to talk to George Mason coach Jim Larranaga, who led the Patriots to an improbable berth in last weekend's Final Four.
Seton Hall contacted Mason athletic director Tom O'Connor, who gave the Pirates the go-ahead to speak to Larranaga as they seek a replacement for Louis Orr.
Reached by telephone, Liz Larranaga said her husband was in New York for an unrelated event and was unsure whether any meetings with Seton Hall were scheduled.
Seton Hall officials did not return a call from The Associated Press seeking comment.
George Mason had never won an NCAA tournament game until Larranaga led the school to upsets over Michigan State, North Carolina and Connecticut in less than two weeks. The Patriots' charmed run ended Saturday when they lost to eventual champion Florida in the national semifinals.
Larranaga's upbeat nature made him a media star, and he was expected to attract coaching offers from major schools. He said repeatedly he intended to stay at George Mason, but he didn't rule out moving elsewhere.
Larranaga has been at George Mason for nine seasons and is under contract through 2008-09, although the school was expected to try to sign him to a contract extension. He is 166-105 with the Patriots, including 27-8 this season.
Orr was fired March 24, a little more than a week after the Pirates lost by 20 to Wichita State in the opening round of the NCAA tournament. Orr was 80-69 with the Pirates and 18-12 this season. He took Seton Hall to two NCAA tournaments and one NIT appearance over five seasons."


He's been grinding it out for quite awhile. I hope he gets more offers and finally get paid after paying his dues.
The Atlantic 10 is full of great coaches and this would be another good one. He looked like he had great control of his players during the tourney(except that one kid Skinner-punching nuts and stuff), but other than that, he took out some big names. Defending champs UNC and UConn on the way to the final four. Too bad Florida was too much for him.

My guess?????

Nobody is gonna bring him up from George Mason.
He holds zero reputation except for this final four and maybe next year.
He's getting older and doesn't recruit all that well.
A prestigious program like Seton Hall is especially not going to bring him aboard.

Looks like he's back at George Mason, I hope he has a good year next year.

Fairfax, VA -- (Sports Network) - Head men's basketball coach Jim Larranaga and George Mason University agreed on a contract extension through the 2011-12 season on Wednesday, rewarding the coach for leading the Patriots to their first-ever Final Four last season.

The 2005-06 season was a magical one for Larranaga and the Patriots, as the team set a school record with 27 victories, tied a Colonial Athletic Association record with 15 conference victories and became the first CAA school to reach the Final Four.

George Mason bested national powers Michigan State, North Carolina and Connecticut, along with Wichita State, on its improbable road to Indianapolis.

"I am very excited and proud of our accomplishments this season and over the past eight years," said Larranaga. "This year's run to the Final Four was a culmination of a lot of hard work by many people, especially my staff and our players."

Larranaga is the school's all-time winningest coach with a record of 166-105. This past season, Larranaga became the CAA's all-time winningest coach, passing former Richmond coach Dick Tarrant.

George Mason has won at least 10 conference games in each of the past eight years, becoming one of just nine schools in the country to accomplish that feat.

"This past season was not an end, but it is the beginning of more great things to come," said Larranaga. "Our returning players have already begun to prepare for next season and are confident they can create more great memories for our Mason nation."
