L.A. Dodgers (64-57) at San Francisco (58-63)

The Dodgers and Giants square off for the second straight weekend, this time in the Bay Area, where L.A.’s Brad Penny (13-5, 3.48 ERA) is set to face Jason Schmidt (9-7, 3.00) in tonight’s opener.

Los Angeles swept San Francisco in a four-game series last week, winning three one-run games, with the fourth decided by two runs. The Dodgers now lead the season series 8-5, winning two of the three battles in San Francisco.

The Dodgers, who were idle on Thursday, come into this contest having won 17 of their last 19 games. Meanwhile, the Giants bounced back from last weekend’s sweep in L.A. by taking four straight from the Padres in San Diego, capped by Thursday’s 8-4 victory.

San Francisco is just 3-10 in its last 13 games as a favorite.

Schmidt is 2-0 with a 1.74 ERA in his last three starts, including a dominant performance Sunday at Dodger Stadium, as he scattered five hits and a walk over eight shutout innings. However, Los Angeles got a walk-off home run in the 10th inning for a 1-0 victory.

The righthander has posted a 2.33 ERA in four starts against the Dodgers this season, yet he’s 0-2 and the Giants have lost all four games. On the bright side, the Giants are 7-2 in Schmidt’s last nine starts against the Dodgers in San Francisco.

Penny beat the Giants 6-5 on Saturday, but he did allow four runs (three earned) on seven hits in six innings. The righthander is 3-0 with a 3.15 ERA in his last three outings. He’s also 2-0 with a 2.08 ERA in four appearances (three starts) against San Francisco this year.

Schmidt is 6-1 with a 2.68 ERA in 12 home starts this season, while Penny is 6-2 with a 3.33 ERA on the road.

The under is 7-3 in Schmidt’s last 10 trips to the mound and 4-1 in his last five starts against L.A. (3-1 this year). Also, the under is 8-2-1 when Penny pitches on the road and 4-2 in his last six outings against San Francisco. Finally, three of the four clashes last weekend stayed low.
