Default Duke Still #1 in AP College Basketball Poll

Duke stayed atop the AP college basketball poll followed by Texas and Connecticut. All three won big early season tournaments. Villanova and Oklahoma stayed fourth and fifth but there was some definite shakeup after that.

Ten ranked teams lost a total of 14 games last week, but 11 of the losses came at the hands of other members of the Top 25. So, only two teams dropped out, West Virginia and Syracuse. NC State and LSU replaced them.

Gonzaga, which beat Michigan State 109-106 in the semifinals at Maui then lost 65-63 at the buzzer to Connecticut in the title game, moved up two spots to sixth place while Louisville, which didn't play last week, dropped one place to seventh. Both Boston College and Memphis moved up two spots to eighth and ninth. Kentucky, which lost to Iowa in the semifinals of the Guardians Classic, dropped three places to No. 10.

The ACC has five teams in the Top 25. Both the Southeastern Conference and Big Ten have four ranked teams this week, while the Big East and Pac-10 have three each. The Big East teams (Connecticut, Villanova and Louisville) are all in the top seven.

This week sees Oklahoma-Villanova and three other double-ranked games this week: North Carolina State-Iowa and Duke-Indiana are on Wednesday as part of the ACC-Big Ten Challenge, and Gonzaga plays Washington on Sunday.
