Default Raiders Norv Turner Should Have Been Long Gone

Sometimes NFL coaches are not nearly as good as their reputation. Such is the case in Oakland with the Raiders’ Norv Turner.

Turner has never been much of a head coach, yet he continues to get chances, and he continues to stink things up. This year’s Raiders have lost three straight and five of six, and they lost to the banged up Jets on Sunday.

"I'm not going to lie to you and say you don't think ahead, and the players don't think ahead and everyone," Turner said Monday. "Every time you go out there as a player, that tape is part of your resume. That tape is what you are. And from a standpoint of individuals, whether they're establishing a career as a young player, whether they're a guy in the middle of their career and trying to show that they're still at this level."

Oakland owner Al Davis has done a poor job of hiring head coaches lately, and Turner is just the latest example. Since Turner let Jon Gruden get away the Raiders have had problems. Bill Callahan inherited Gruden’s team and had one year of success, but other than that season the Raiders have been bad.

"I've been through too many NFL seasons to know there are no guarantees," Turner said. "There's nothing guaranteed to you. We had a couple of real tough losses early, but our guys responded from those and bounced back. It's the ups and downs again of the season. But in terms of surprise, that's a word you'd use if you're naive about what this league is all about."

Turner spent nearly seven seasons as Washington Redskins coach, leading them to a 49-59-1 record and just one playoff berth from 1994-2000 before being fired with three games left in his final season. Things have gone no better in Oakland. When will Al Davis realize that he needs to do a little research before hiring his next head coach. Maybe looking at the win loss record of the coach might be a good place to start. “What do you think Al?”
