Baseball Pick - Chicago WS @ Detroit Chicago White Sox (73-51) at Detroit (80-45)
A pair of veteran lefthanders are set to duel at Comerica Park, with Chicago’s Mark Buehrle (10-10, 4.80 ERA) taking on Kenny Rogers (12-6, 4.34).
Detroit became the first team in baseball to win 80 games with Monday’s 7-1 victory over the White Sox. It was a rare win, in that Jim Leyland’s team is just 4-9 against the defending champs this season, including 3-4 in Motown.
The Tigers snapped a three-game losing skid with Monday’s win, and they’re still just 4-9 in their last 13 contests. Meanwhile, the White Sox have followed up a five-game winning streak by dropping six of their last eight.
Detroit is 53-20 in its last 73 games as a favorite.
Buehrle snapped a personal six-game losing skid with Thursday’s 5-4 home victory over the Royals, as he gave up two runs on six hits in six innings. It was just the third time in his last nine starts that Buehrle surrendered fewer than five runs in a game.
Buehrle yielded three runs on seven hits in six innings in his lone 2006 start against Detroit back on Aug. 12, failing to earn a decision in Chicago’s 4-3 victory. He’s 11-5 with a 2.65 ERA in 19 career games (18 starts) against his A.L. Central rivals. The southpaw is also 4-5 with a 5.69 ERA in 10 road outings this year.
Rogers seems to have bounced back from a mini-slump, going 1-1 with a 2.37 ERA in his last three trips to the mound. He snapped a three-game losing skid with Thursday’s 4-2 win over the Rangers, giving up two runs in five innings.
Rogers has been sensational at home (5-1, 3.16 ERA) and even better in three starts against the White Sox (1-1, 1.35 ERA). For his career, he’s 14-8 with a 4.30 ERA against Chicago.
The Tigers’ offense has been much more successful against lefthanders lately than the White Sox, with Detroit batting .315 in the last 10 games and Chicago hitting .234.
The under has been the play in the last three starts for both Buehrle and Rogers. Also, the under is 5-0-1 in Buehrle’s last six starts against the Tigers and 5-2 in Rogers’ last seven outings against Chicago.
The under is on runs of 8-3-1 for Chicago and 10-2-1 for Detroit. Also, 25 of the last 31 meetings have stayed low, including an amazing 12 of 13 this season. ATS ADVANTAGE: UNDER |
