NFL Pick - Carolina at Jacksonville Carolina (1-0, 0-1 ATS) at Jacksonville (1-0 SU and ATS) The Panthers’ first-string units look for their second straight solid performance when they head south to face the Jaguars. Carolina scored two quick touchdowns and held on late to beat Buffalo 14-13 in its preseason opener last week, though the Panthers failed to cover as a three-point home chalk. Jake Delhomme, who went 5 of 6 for 64 yards and a touchdown last week, will start against the Jaguars and play into the second quarter, followed by Chris Weinke and Stephan LeFlors. All-Pro receiver Steve Smith is back practicing with the Panthers, but is doubtful for tonight’s game. Jacksonville’s Byron Leftwich started and went 6-for-12 for 100 yards with a touchdown and an interception in last week’s victory at Miami. Backup David Garrard was even more impressive, completing 6 of 11 tosses for 172 yards and two touchdowns. Leftwich, who has some soreness in his arm, is slated to start, but likely will play only one or two series, with Garrard getting the bulk of the snaps. No. 3 QB Quinn Gray will see a lot of action in the second half, with rookie Paul Pinegar possibly mopping up. Wideouts Matt Jones and Troy Edwards and rookie TE Marcedes Lewis will not play for the Jaguars. The Panthers are 11-2 SU and 10-3 ATS in the preseason since 2003, including 5-1 on the road (4-2 ATS). The Jaguars are 9-4 SU and 8-5 ATS in the exhibition season since Jack Del Rio took over as coach in 2003. ATS ADVANTAGE: JACKSONVILLE |
