Preseason NFL Pick - Seattle @ San Deigo - 8-26-06 Seattle (1-1 SU and ATS) at San Diego (1-1 SU and ATS)
This old AFC West rivalry resumes tonight, as the Seahawks head to Qualcomm Stadium to face the Chargers.
The Seahawks upset the Colts 30-17 in Indianapolis last week, while the Chargers got pounded 24-3 in Chicago as four-point underdogs.
Seattle QB Matt Hasselbeck went 8 of 9 for 88 yards against the Colts, and he’s completed 80 percent of his throws in the preseason. Backup Seneca Wallace has also been solid, clicking on 65.6 percent of his passes for 216 yards. Hasselbeck and the starters will play the first half against the Chargers, with Wallace getting most of the second-half snaps.
San Diego’s Philip Rivers stumbled against the Bears last week, completing just 9 of 14 passes for 75 yards in a half of action. One of his errant passes was picked off and returned for a touchdown. Rookie Charlie Whitehurst got all the second-half snaps and went 11 of 19 for 97 yards with an INT. Whitehurst is competing with A.J. Feeley for the backup job, and both are slated to play tonight behind Rivers, but coach Marty Schottenheimer didn’t reveal in which order they’ll take the field.
Schottenheimer said Rivers and the rest of the starters will play the first half, plus one or two series of the third quarter. One exception is Pro Bowl running back LaDanian Tomlinson, whom Schottenheimer said won’t see the field at all this preseason. Michael Turner will once again start in Tomlinson’s place, and he’ll also pull double duty as the team’s kick returner, with Darren Sproles out for the year after breaking his leg in the preseason opener.
The Chargers’ defense is in mid-season form, allowing a combined 407 yards and 13 points through two exhibition games, with the starters pitching a shutout so far.
Seattle has won seven of the last eight times these teams have met since 2000 (5-2-1 ATS).
San Diego is 5-4 (4-5 ATS) in exhibition home games since Schottenheimer took over in 2002. ATS ADVANTAGE: SEATTLE |
