Preaseason NFL Pick - St. Louis @ Kansas City - 8-26-06 St. Louis (1-1 SU, 0-2 ATS) at Kansas City (0-2 SU and ATS)
This preseason rivalry resumes tonight, as the Rams head into Arrowhead Stadium for their annual Governor’s Cup tilt with the Chiefs.
St. Louis hits the road for the first time after beating the Cots 19-17 in the opener and losing to the Texans 27-20 as three-point favorites last week. Kansas City has lost its first two games, including a 17-0 setback at the Giants as three-point underdogs on Aug. 17.
QB Marc Bulger leads the Rams offense but has struggled this summer, producing just two field goals in five possessions. Gus Frerotte performed well in the backup role last week, going 7 of 11 for 93 yards and a touchdown.
The Rams’ starters will play the entire first half, with the exception of running back Steven Jackson, who is expected to get about five carries before giving way to fifth-year back Tony Fisher. Marshall Faulk is out for the season, leaving rookies Antoine Bagwell and J.D. Washington to battle it out for the third-string spot.
Trent Green, who went 4 of 6 for 32 yards in last week’s shutout loss in New York, will start for Kansas City. Coach Herm Edwards did not reveal whether rookie QB Brodie Croyle or veteran Damon Huard will be first off the bench to replace Green, but he did say Croyle will see extensive playing time after missing the first two games with a sore shoulder.
The Chiefs’ Pro Bowl guard Will Shields will not be in the lineup tonight, and the running-back rotation is thin, with Michael Bennett, Ronnie Cruz and Priest Holmes injured and doubtful for this contest. Starting tailback Larry Johnson figures to see only limited action.
Including regular-season action, the Chiefs are 5-2 SU and ATS against the Rams since 2000 (3-2 SU and ATS in preseason action). On the down side, Kansas City has lost eight straight preseason games overall, failing to cover the spread in any of them.
The Rams are just 2-8 (3-7 ATS) on the road over the last five summers. ATS ADVANTAGE: KANSAS CITY |
